S D Phadnis, the creator of caption-less cartoons.
Shri S.D. Phadnis is an Indian cartoonist whose work spans over 80 years – a rare legacy of uninterrupted creative excellence. Born in 1925, he began publishing cartoons in 1945 and has since become a national icon, best known for his social (non-political), thought provoking, caption less, multicoloured cartoons with classic humour that transcend language and literacy barriers.
Phadnis studied commercial art in the prestigious Sir J.J. School of arts, Mumbai, with flying colours in 1949. He started cartooning as a hobby. After gaining some success and having understood the importance of this art form, SDP took up cartooning as a full time career. He moved to Pune with the strong active support of noted editor, late Mr. Anant Antarkar of Huns Publications. Since then, innumerable books and periodicals have been enlivened by the cartoons of S D Phadnis.
He revolutionized educational cartoons, influenced copyright and tax policies to benefit artists, spread child-friendly Maths learning through humour.
His public service cartoons are used by UNICEF, Govt. of Maharashtra, Govt. of India, NGOs, educators, and publishers.
